Ames police seeking man in killing of woman found dead in apartment Saturday night

Ames police detectives are seeking a man in what they say was the apparent killing of a woman whose body was found in an Ames apartment Saturday night.

Police said they believe Richard G. Fleck, 33, also known as Rashaud Sims, is in the Kansas City, Missouri, area, though he also has ties to Texas and Mississippi.

“We determined that this gentleman, Mr. Fleck, had been staying with the victim in this case, and believe they were likely boyfriend-girlfriend,” Ames police Cmdr. Jason Tuttle told the Des Moines Register. “And so we believe that he was likely one of the last people that probably would have been in the apartment with her.”

Officers found the woman dead in the apartment in the 400 block of S. Fifth St. at 7:02 p.m. Saturday as they were performing a welfare check, a police news release said. Another law enforcement agency requested the welfare check, Tuttle said, but police are not identifying the department as the investigation continues.

After a preliminary investigation, they concluded the woman had been murdered.

Tuttle said the woman, whose name police were withholding until her family is notified, was in her 30s.

Anyone with information about the woman’s death or Fleck is asked to call Ames police at 515-239-5133 or the department’s anonymous tip line at 515-239-5533. People may also call Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa at 515-223-1400.

Police said the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is also investigating.
